HMR Institute of Technology & Management
From Idea to Investable
HMR Campus Shark Tank — Mentorship Program
Overview
I mentored 5 student teams through HMR Institute's Campus Shark Tank — selected from 60+ registrations. 2 of my teams won the final pitch.
The Challenge
Most student teams arrive at pitch competitions with a product idea but no go-to-market thinking. They can describe what they've built, but not why it matters, who will pay for it, or how it survives first contact with a skeptical investor. The real problem isn't the idea — it's the inability to defend it.
The Approach
Rather than polishing decks, we pressure-tested each idea for go-to-market viability from week one. Every session simulated the toughest questions a judge could ask. We rebuilt each student's ability to defend their idea under real pressure — not rehearsed answers, but genuine conviction backed by logic.
“By the end, they weren't presenting ideas. They were defending ventures.”
Outcomes
- 2 of 5 mentored teams won the Campus Shark Tank final
- Teams shifted from "competition entry" mindset to "venture I could actually build"
- Students developed the ability to handle hostile questioning without losing composure
- Go-to-market frameworks applied to real product ideas, not hypothetical cases
